When it comes to deciding on a set of golf clubs to buy, this process can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

You can go to just about any retail store that doesn't have a golf pro and grab a set of clubs off the shelf, toss them in the trunk of the car, and head off to the golf course. You can find yourself a reasonably good set of golf clubs at a garage sale or an estate sale. It is not only a matter of money but it is more a matter of how you handle the opportunities around you to be able to fit the landscape. You can't show at an exquisite party if you don't have the proper manners. Period! Before playing you have to wear the right clothes, to have the proper equipment and to show the right attitude. Most of us will never arrive to Tiger Woods persormances and neither to Garcia's, Els's Michelson's and Daly's. The primary reason is that they have golf in their DNA and besides that they have for sure a burning desire, a lot of practice and exercises, the know how and persistence which lead them to performance.

But this doesn't have to stop us in any way. In every activities and businesses there are roll models, the performers which show us that the performances can be attained.

No matter if we need to play golf for pleasure, or to fit in the high society or if we think of a career in this domain we have to learn the right skills, the basics which will be the base for anything we will want to do with golf. To use the high society example, imagine going to an exclusive golf contest with your fellows businessmen and kicking the ball in a stupid way. You will probably be considered uneducated and even rude because you didn't have the common sense to buy a golf course before showing yourself there.

Golf Lesson - 3 Places to Focus Your Golf Lessons

Well another spring is here and you are vowing to improve your golf game again this year. This year you are even talking about taking golf lessons to reach new levels in your golf game. It is serious this year!

We have all done this before. The challenge is that this goal of improving our golf game is not specific enough. It will help you to break it down to a more specific golf goal. For example, I am going to lower my putts per round by 4 putts by fill in the date is a specific goal. Now you can realize what you need to do to make it happen and place it underneath it.

This is a specific quantifiable goal that will make you feel the pressure of actually playing. If you do not believe me wait until you only have to make one more!

2. Short game

Most professionals will call the short game any shot within 100 yards of the hole. If you are just starting to play it may be everything within 50 yards. For our purposes we will call it any shot that is not a full swing. The short game will include chipping and pitching of the golf ball. Whether you take a real golf lesson or read an online lesson to understand the fundamentals of the short game, you can play the same type of game to improve. In this game, you will need to get the golf ball up and down from five different spots before you can move on to your round, the next part of your practice session or end your practice session and go home. Again this will make you feel the pressure but yet keep it fun for you.

3. Full Swing

To improve your golf full swing it makes sense to take a golf lesson from a PGA Professional. This may be an individual golf lesson a series of golf lessons or even a golf clinic. Concentrate on the fundamentals of the full swing. It always amazes my higher handicap students to find out that the lower handicap players are working on trying to improve the same things that they are. How to Choose the Right Golf Clubs For Your Game

Golf clubs have changed over the years and the way we play golf has altered as well. Our irons have changed, with most manufacturers realising the increasing popularity of easy-to-hit hybrids and marketing irons sets which start at the 4-iron and sometimes even at the 5-iron. It makes sense, as for most club players the hybrid is significantly easier to hit than the corresponding iron.

Driver dimensions are regulated by the USGA and R&A size limits. Most club golfers would do well to play that maximum allowable driver volume which is 460 cc. If you struggle with consistency with your driver, moving to a bigger sized driver will almost certainly help. Pushing the weight to the perimeter of the these big drivers and new square and triangular designs means the modern driver is far more forgiving, even from miss-hits. 460cc drivers allow for a larger margin of error.

In common with all clubs, the engine of your driver rests in the shaft. Get the shaft wrong and your accuracy and distance off the tee will suffer. Many of the most common faults in golf can be put down to the shaft. If a slice is ruining your scores, then playing a more flexible shaft might be the solution. Struggling to get any height - a shaft with a softer tip section could well be the solution. Your driving will pick up if you match your driver shaft specifications to your swing speed. If you don't know your swing speed, nearly all of the top shaft manufacturers also factor in shaft ratings for carry distances as well. Check the ratings for various shafts and match your normal carry yardage to a flex rating.

The quickest growing market in golf equipment sales are hybrid golf clubs. If you need consistency with your long irons, some easy-to-hit hybrids could well be your best choice. Manufactured to be forgiving and playable from all lies, hybrids are easy to play from the tee and the fairway. You can even chip with them. These are clubs that are designed to hit high, so most shaft companies are offering specialty shafts built with this in mind.

With irons the choices are even bigger. Modern irons can help many of the most widespread swing faults. Offset irons to minimize the slice, wider soles on irons can reduce the fat shot and get much needed height on the ball for many. Take a good look at the irons you play. If their design doesn't give you the help you need, then it's probably time for a change.

There are plenty of options to decide on in the scoring clubs as well. Wedges come in a range of forgiving designs so wedge play needn't be compromised anymore. If the little flop wedge shot is causing problems, then a high lofted wedge could be the solution. If poor bunker play is spoiling your rounds, choose an easy to hit hollow sand wedge. These hollow wedges are almost impossible to miss-hit and make easy work of just about any bunker.

Changes in equipment rules have given us some pretty exotic looking putter designs. Strange looking, but playable. If you struggle with the flat stick, a more forgiving putter design may well be the best decision. Closing the putter too much towards the hole? You probably miss a lot of putts to the left (for a right handed golfer) and a face balanced putter might well be the cure.

Choosing the right golf clubs for your game is about playing clubs that make the most of your strong points and reduce your weaknesses. You won't need to break the bank either. This starts with selection. To arrive at your best driver, you need remember some simple that it all lies with the club head. The club is either judged to be good or bad depending on its head. The size

When choosing the best golf driver, you need to get the driver with the right size. If you want to enjoy better control, go for the standard size club head. In addition, you will also enjoy faster swings and a smaller sweet spot. It measures between 150 and 155 cubic centimeters. These 5 golf swing falsehoods have ruined more golf swings than I care to imagine. I believe these 5 so called "golf swing tips" are the reason the average golfer's handicap has stayed the same for the past 20 years - Even with all the advancements in golf equipment technology.

I will be pulling the curtain back on some golf swing tips you may consider as gospel...so please keep an open mind.

Top 5 Golf Fallacies That Are Ruining Golfer's Game:

1. RELAX - Pure rubbish! How many times have you heard this golf swing tip from a golf pro or a playing partner? The golf swing is a violent action - is there any other violent action you take when you relax? - of course not - This is foolish advice.

2. Be Loose. This is the second cousin of "Relax". When you are "loose" in the golf swing your hips are NOT restricted therefore you will NOT have that important coil in your backswing robbing you of much power.

3. Take The Club Back Inside - More rubbish! I'm sure you've heard many times how the correct golf swing is from the inside. So some golfers yank the club way inside early in their backswing thinking this will allow them to hit from the inside. These golfers are shocked when they still hit the golf ball from the outside. Hitting the golf ball from the inside comes from proper hip and shoulder action at the start of the downswing. You can take the club back way outside and still hit the ball from the inside - look at Jim Furyk - he takes the club way back to the outside however his move from the top of the swing is pure and from the inside.

4. The Golf Club Is On The Same Plane Going Back As It Is Coming Down. Again, this golf swing tip has been misguiding golfers for generations. The path of the clubface is much more to the inside during the downswing than during the backswing in a sound golf swing. This is because a proper golf swing has a lateral shift of the hips which drops the club into the all important "slot" early in the downswing. This action of the left hip automatically puts the path of the clubface much more to the inside than the path going back.

5. Turn The Hips To The Left To Start The Downswing. This golf fallacy causes golfers to "spin out" during the downswing and the result is a total mis-hit of the golf ball. Turning the hips to start the downswing forces you to throw the golf club to the outside causing terrible mis-hits. Again, the correct move is a lateral shift of the left hip to start the downswing and the hips will then turn automatically. It is possible to NOT have this lateral shift and still turn the hips from the top - however, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have the lateral shift of the left hip to start the downswing and the hips NOT turn.

5 Golf Tips On Driving Better Off The Tee

#1) Adjust your setup - Make sure you play the golf ball all the way forward in your stance so that it is directly in line with your left heel. Your stance should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart. You want to have a nice solid base which you can turn and coil around. Also, for the right handed golfer, you want to tilt your spine slightly to the right as this will allow you to swing and hit the golf ball on a slight upswing, launching it high into the air. This adjustment in your setup will also lead to more distance off the tee.

#2) Keep Your Lower Body Stable - When you are swinging, the job of the lower body is to act as a base around which your turn and coil your upper body. This allows you to wind up correctly and will create more power as you swing through the golf ball and release the golf club.

#3) Keep Your Shoulders Square At Impact - It is a very common swing fault to open your upper body too early in the downswing without giving your arms time to catch up. Everything needs to come together at impact, so making sure your shoulders stay square through the impact zone will allow you to be more in-sync and hit more solid and consistent golf shots. Having the shoulders open is even more common with the driver as it is a longer club so you need to allow yourself to be more aware of the timing of your arms and body working together. It's a slightly longer swing, so you have to stay down and through your shot at impact just a split second longer than when hitting an iron.

#4) Make Sure The Hands Lead Ahead Slightly At Impact - You want to build up some lag or leverage in your golf swing because this will allow you to hit it farther and strike the golf ball more consistently. Make sure that you create some wrist angle or wrist set in your backswing and then maintain that angle in your wrists for as long as possible in the downswing. This will allow you to come into impact with your hands slightly ahead of the golf ball producing a much more solid golf shot. It is a common fault to release the golf club too early in the downswing where the clubhead gets to the golf ball before the hands do. Make sure to focus on creating a good angle with your wrists and hold that angle until the last second right as you are hitting the golf ball.

#5) Eliminate Excess Body Motion For More Consistency- It's common with the driver to want to swing extra hard in order to try and hit the ball farther. One problem with swinging too hard is your body will probably move too much. Your head should stay relatively still during your golf swing even with your driver. You do not want too much lateral movement. If you shift your weight too much to the right on the backswing, you may be getting your weight outside your right foot. Make sure when you turn in the backswing, you turn so that your weight shifts to the inside of the right foot. On the downswing and follow through, make sure to stay balanced and behind the ball slightly, instead of feeling like you are moving forward too far.

Golf Fitness Exercises for the Amateur Golfer

With all the talk about the players on tour getting stronger and more flexible, we hear a lot about exercising for golf from television commentators and read about it in the golf publications. But what exactly are the best exercises for the amateur golfer?

A great question that has a good answer, but before we give you the answer let us provide some background so the answer makes a little more sense to you. First of all, discussing the golf swing for the time being will get us rolling.

What exactly is the golf swing? The golf swing is an athletic movement that requires using of the entire body from “feet to fingertips” in order to complete the swing. Realize that the golf swing is not about the club, not just about your grip, or where your head is during the swing. The golf swing is a movement that requires your entire body to move through a sequence of movements with the correct timing. To perform the “athletic movement” of the golf swing requires the body to begin at address, move through the actual phases of the golf swing and complete it with the follow through. In order to perform this activity with efficiency and repetitively, the body must have certain physical parameters.

These parameters, as I call them, are actual physical categories of the body that need to be developed to a certain level. These categories of the body are the platform from which the body is able to perform the athletic movement of a golf swing efficiently. The categories are probably familiar to many of you, but for the purpose of this article let us briefly run through them.

The body is required to have certain levels of flexibility, balance, endurance, strength, and power to complete a golf swing. If the body lacks in any of the above categories, then the results will be seen in the golf swing. The results are usually in the form of poor mechanics, bad shots, or poor scores on the course. So, now that we know what the connection is between the “body” and the “swing” let us address the question about the best exercises for golf.

The Best Exercises for Golf

Let’s say you walk into your local health club and see all the fancy machines and aerobic machines at the facility to get you shape. What ones would choose? Would you choose running on the treadmill for 30 minutes, or would it be better to push out a couple sets of bench presses? Well, the answer to our question really lies within the connection between your swing and your body.

I will tell you that exercises meant to “pump you up!” or give you that “six pack” are not necessarily the correct exercises for your golf game. Neither is that weight training program you used back in high school. So, with those thoughts in mind what do you think the best exercises for golf are?

Right now we know, in general terms about the golf swing, what is required of the body for the golf swing and what exercises are not good for the swing. Armed with that knowledge we can decipher what the best exercises for golf are for you.

Beginning with flexibility, we know that the entire body must move through certain ranges of motion to perform an effective golf swing. And what happens if your body is not able to move through the required ranges of motion of the golf swing? The answer: the golf swing will mechanically suffer resulting in shots that are less than optimal. So part of the exercises that are good for golfers are flexibility exercises and, even more so, flexibility exercises that work the muscles used in the golf swing through the movements involved in the golf swing. So first and foremost flexibility exercises should be on the top of your list.

The second category of exercises that would be conducive to the golf swing would have to do with balance. We hear about balance in reference to the golf swing all the time. “Stay balanced through the swing; transfer your weight to maintain balance during the swing…” But what does balance exactly mean? Balance is the ability to control your body through a specific movement pattern. The movement pattern we are discussing just happens to be the golf swing. We know the importance of balance in relation to the golf swing, so how do we train our body for better balance in the golf swing? Before we answer that question we need to know a little more about balance. Balance in relation to the body has to do with the connection between your nerves and muscles. Essentially your nervous system, as a result of messages sent from your brain, tells your muscles how to move to maintain the body’s balance. The more efficient your nerves and muscles are to these messages the greater balance abilities the body develops. So balance exercises train both the nervous system and muscular system to become more efficient at this function. Summing it all up, balance is the second category of exercises that will assist your golf game.

The third category of exercises that are beneficial to golf have to do with your muscles. The golf swing requires the muscles of your body to move through a specific range of motion (flexibility) and help with your balance capacities. In order to perform these actions and others, your body needs certain levels of strength and endurance. The definition of strength is the ability of the muscles to exert force for the given “athletic action” (simplified definition but a good working definition for us). Endurance is the ability of your muscles to do the same activity over and over again for a specific amount of time.

First off, let us discuss strength. The golf swing has one intention of developing club head speed while maintaining balance through the swing. The muscles in your body must have enough strength in them to do both. Now, when we discuss building strength for the golf swing it is NOT the type of strength needed to bench press 250 lbs. Or squat 500! It is strength geared towards the improvement of your swing. I refer to this type of strength as “golf strength.” So when you get to the gym, performing strength exercises like bench press will not help your swing. Exercises that train the body in the positions and through the movements of the golf swing will help your swing.

In addition to strength, we need to develop endurance in your muscles. Think of how many swings you may take over the course of 18 holes. In order for you to be able to swing the club the same way on the 18th hole as you did on the 1st hole. Your body has to have high levels of endurance. This will allow your body to perform the golf swing without getting tired. You develop endurance similar to how you develop “golf strength.” Utilize exercises that train the body in the positions and through the movements of the golf swing. Lighter loads with higher repetitions will be used for these exercises. The end result will be the development of “golf endurance.”

The final segment of exercises beneficial to your golf swing is power training. Power training is geared towards the ability of your body to generate high levels of club head speed. Power development by the body is what allows for greater distance on your shots. Clubs help, golf balls help, but it really comes down to the piece of machinery, your body, swinging those club and hitting those golf balls. Development of power for the golf swing is very similar to the development of “golf strength and endurance.” It is the utilization of exercises that place your body in the positions and move you through movements similar to the golf swing.

Summary

So there you have it, the answer to the types of exercises best for the improvement of your golf swing. I think you now realize it is not one exercise, but a group of exercises that incorporate flexibility, balance, endurance, strength, and power. A combination of these exercises is what will enhance your golf swing.

How to Play Faster - Golf Tips

Some golfers get frustrated and are looking for golf tips, because an 18 hole round of golf can take over 5-6 hours and take a whole day out of a busy schedule. If this is one of your frustrations, there are some solutions to the problem.

Of course you might have to check to see if you are one of the reasons for slow play. Do you look for lost balls for more than a few minutes? Do you take 10 practice swings? Do you take a long time to putt? If you have any of these slow habits, you might need to overcome them by golf tips, golf putting tips and golf practice tips.

Several other tips that I found useful in being able to play a more enjoyable and less time consuming round of golf:

1. Join an exclusive country club that is rarely crowded.

2- Don’t play at a course that allows fivesomes.

3- Try to play during the week if you have a flexible schedule.

4- Find out what time the first players are allowed on the course and be one of the first groups to play even if it is 5 or 6 am.

5- If you live in a metropolitan area, you might have to drive an hour out of town to find a less crowded course. It could be very well worth the drive with your friends.

Remember these golf tips if you want to play a more enjoyable game of golf and not have to wait 10 or 15 minutes on every hole because of slow play.

Snapshot of Golf Rules

Did you know there are over five hundred pages in the official USGA rule book. Well instead of reading all five hundred pages, allow me to give you an overview.

Remember, the rules may not always be fair, but like your parents' rules — they're rigid. To keep the integrity of the game, rules must be adhered to.

First, let me explain a little history. In 1744, the Company of Gentlemen Golfers was established in Edinburgh and then codified the first rules of play which have been evolving ever since.

GOLF RULES

Tee Time - Remember to tee off either between or behind (up to two club-lengths) the tee-markers. Don't tee off in front of them.

Playing The Ball - Play the ball where it lies and don't try to make the course any better by moving, adjusting, fixing or bending and of the natural scenery (except when taking your stance or making your swing).

Ball Lost or Out of Bounds - If you lose your ball and can't find it after five minutes, you have to play another ball from the spot where the last shot was played and you lose one stroke.

Ball Interference - If you deflect or stop your ball in motion you've cost yourself two strokes. Accidents will happen, but you still pay the price. If a ball struck by you is interfered with by someone else, play it as it lies. If your ball is struck by another ball, there's not much you can do about that.

Ball At Rest Moved - If you move your ball after it's come to rest, you've cost yourself a stroke.

Obstructions - If they are in your way, It's allowable to move obstructions such as rakes, trash, leaves, etc. If an immovable obstruction, such as a water fountain, interferes with your stance or swing, you're allowed to drop the ball within one club-length of the nearest clear point that's not nearer the hole.

On The Green - After getting your ball on the green, remove the flagstick from the hole and replace it when all players have finished the hole. You can pick up and clean your ball on the green, provided you replace it exactly where it was.

NOT JUST THE RULES OF GOLF, BUT....

Use common sense - The idea here is just common sense courtesies. When it comes to attire, make it appropriate. Regarding noises, don't make loud noises. How about the trash on the course? Well, if you don't like your car filled with trash, then don't toss cans or bottles on the course. Oh, talking on your cell phone is kind of rude also. Just remember common sense courtesies are all about "doing onto others as you would have them do unto you".

Arrive on Time - Most courses are pretty busy so arrive on time.

Let Others Play Through - If you can't get through a hole or a shot in a reasonable amount of time, let those behind you play through.

Toss A Coin - Who plays first is usually decided by a coin toss, but you can be creative. Spin the beer bottle works for some.

Stand Clear - Don't get in the way of someone's shot. This is not only courteous but in the best interest of your safety. A one-pound clubhead moving at 100 miles per hour can easily turn your head into mush.

Replace Divots (also known as chunks of turf and earth scooped up during a swing) - This would include raking the sand trap after you're done making your bunker shot.

Do Not Launch a Club - Don't fling your club fifty yards when you miss that two foot putt. It may hit Johnny Cochran or someone else and you might find yourself in court.

Even though some can get pretty uptight on the course, having a great time out there should also be included when it comes to the rules of golf. After all, it's just a game.

This is simply a result of the mechanics of the golf swing itself. The execution of the golf swing places the lower back under immense shear forces each and every golf swing, and the muscles of the lower back must withstand these shear forces. Muscles of the body when under stress from physical activity eventually become fatigued. Once the lower back muscles are fatigued, supporting the stressors of the golf swing and executing the mechanics of the golf swing are compromised. Resulting in some very common situations for the golfer.


Again, we are all aware the lower back is one of the most oft injured areas of the body in the game of golf. Statistics indicate approximately 50% of all golfers will incur a lower back injury during their playing careers. This statistic tell us a great deal about the importance of keeping the lower back healthy in the game of golf. Outside of the lower back becoming injured from the golf swing. The situation of performance on the golf course comes into play. Often times prior to injury occurring, a drop in performance will occur. This is a result of the fatigue within the lower back not allowing the mechanics of the golf swing to be executed correctly.


On the PGA Tour keeping the lower back strong and injury free is a daily task. It is understandable how much time is spent on lower back injury prevention when the biomechanics of the golf swing are understood. Over time, this can easily cause injury if you do not take the correct steps. This leads me to e-mail I received a little while back from BioForce subscriber Bryan.

He wrote in with a question about his lower back and here is what he had to say;

First and foremost the reasons for lower back pain is numerous and is best identified by a qualified physician.

My first suggestion is to get the lower back checked out by a back specialists. This will determine what exactly is going on with the lower back and what is the best treatment.

Now Bryan brings up a very good point in his e-mail. He discusses the possibility that his lower back discomfort is caused by playing too much golf. (you can never play enough golf!, well…maybe)
This absolutely could be the reason why his lower back is “tight” and “sore”.

Again, we know the lower back is placed under high amounts of stress every single swing of the golf club. Over time the muscles of the lower back can become fatigued from the golf swing. This will eventually lead to the muscles of the lower back “giving up” and becoming fatigued.
Once the muscles of the lower back are fatigued it is a very short step to injury. What is the process of eliminating this type of scenario playing out?

It simply requires the development of muscular endurance in the lower back to withstand the stressors of the golf swing. Bottom line the golf swing is a repetitive movement, requiring the body to perform the swing over and over again. In order for the muscles (lower back muscles included) involved in the golf swing to perform the repeatable movements of the golf swing over and over again in an efficient manner.

Muscular endurance is the ability of the neuromuscular system of the body to perform a repetitive biomechanical movement (i.e. golf swing) without becoming fatigued. How do you develop muscular endurance specific to the golf swing? By simply, implementing golf fitness exercises into a structured program.

In addition to the development of increased muscular endurance the efficiency of the golf swing mechanics may require adjustment. Efficiency within the mechanics of the golf swing can directly affect the amount of stress placed upon the lower back.

Additional research has indicated the shear forces placed upon the lower back of a professional golfer is significantly less than the amateur golfer. The reason for the difference is the mechanics of the golf swing performed by the professional is much more efficient, placing less stress on the lower back.

Stated previously, numerous reasons exist for the lower back to become injured. The mechanics of the golf swing and endurance with muscles of the lower back are only two of many possibilities. According to new research, more than 60% of cars in the USA North America travel less than 15 miles per day and nearly half of drivers travel less than five miles away from home. With gas prices climbing higher every day and air being polluted with gas emissions, a golf car is the most environmentally friendly vehicle out there. With all the golf cart accessories available, golf carts can become one of the most stylish and eco-friendly vehicles on the road.


Golf carts are widely used in university campuses where they transport people, goods and equipment, and are even used in cases of medical emergencies. They are also used in quiet neighborhoods, at large sports events by the personnel, and of course, on golf courses by golfers. Many golf carts are purchased by disabled people who appreciate the higher speed and safety of golf carts compared to those of power wheelchairs.

Periodization Training For Golf

The idea of periodization has been around a very long time for athletes at all levels. The concept is simple. If you started with the goal in mind, let's say it was to win the Club Championship or place in the top 3 in your next Amateur event, then you would plan accordingly.

Generally, an annual plan is used, although it is not uncommon to use longer periods of time especially when working with a younger developing athlete.

Periodization occurs when you break down all of the segments into actual manageable parts, always keeping the long term goal in mind. Your master plan may be broken down into which phase you are in, for example, are you in your competitive stage or pre-competitive stage? This information is then used to determine which strategies offer the most benefit at any given point in time.

If you use a holistic approach to golf improvement, then you also periodize each important component as in the physical, mental, technical and strategic side.

While this many sound like a lot of information to track, this is the very point of periodization. Breaking down all of the important parts into simple tasks you can complete daily and/or weekly which fit comfortably and naturally into achieving your long term goal.

What is the real payoff for you? Well, just like the pros, when you prepare in this manner you leave nothing to chance. You have less margin for error and a higher probability of meeting or succeeding your goals.

To give you an idea of how to periodize a program for golf, first consider your competitive season, then employ the following ideas.

Phase 1 - Restoring optimal flexibility or range of motion in hips, spine and shoulders.

Phase 2 - Choose adaptation exercises where the main objective is to involve many muscle groups while preparing joints, tendons and ligaments for the work ahead. Build a solid base of support through stabilization exercises.

Phase 3 - Build strength. Consider increasing your loads, time under tension and create an opportunity for increased force production.

Phase 4 - Power production. Not you can convert all of your previous efforts to completion of the process where all energy is stored and transferred in efficient movement patterns for the benefit of your golf swing.

Phase 5 - Active recovery and rest. Don't forget that every body needs a recovery period so it can maintain gains made throughout the year while protecting the body from injury.

Golf Equipment Tips to Help Lower Your Score

When you get into top of the line clubs, there truly isn't much of a difference between the different makes and brands. There is quite a difference between the top of the line clubs and the cheap knock-offs, but you have to take into consideration how much you are going to play. The flex will influence the ball flight and give you more distance, but it can be more difficult to control. A stiff shaft will give you more control, but you will lose a lot of distance on your shot. Generally, the faster your swing is the stiffer the shaft should be.


The lie angle can be tested by placing your clubs on a lie board or looking at the divots. A divot that is deeper at the toe shows you have your lie is too flat, while divots that are deeper in the heel show you that your lie is too steep. Having a lie that is too flat will cause the head of your club to turn in a way that you will push your shots, and a lie that is too steep will do the exact opposite.


The last tip you want to look at is the loft. The golf club loft should especially be considered when looking at the woods. A slower swing will require more loft and flex and the opposite is the case for a faster swing. High handicap players should get a loft of 9 to 12 degrees.

What Are Golf Balls Made Of That Make Them Go So Far?

In the chemistry of air pressure, turbulence, and aerodynamics, surface structures are vital physical element. History has it that there are things that seem to be peculiar on their make-up hundreds of years ago which eventually came up with a better composition based on scientific research. And a golf ball is the best paradigm of this theoretical stand in history.

During the earliest days of golf on the eastern coast of Scotland, most players used ancient apparatus in order to play the game in a more disorganized and informal way. Here, the first clubs and golf balls are made up of wood.

It was on 1618 that the feather golf ball was finally introduced. This was commonly known as the "Featherie". This feather golf ball was a handcrafted ball made with goose feathers securely pressed into a horse or cowhide sphere. This is being done while the ball is still wet. After drying, the leather shrank and the feathers expanded creating a hardened ball.

But because these kinds of golf balls are specially handcrafted, they usually cost higher than the clubs. In doing so, only a few privileged people could afford to play golf during those times.

Next, came the Guttie golf ball. This prehistoric kind of golf ball was made from the rubber like sap of the Gutta tree that can be found in the tropics. Normally, these Guttie balls can be easily shaped into a sphere when hot and eventually used as a golf ball. With its rubber nature, guttie balls can be cheaply reproduced and can be easily repaired by reheating and reshaping.

However, between the two earliest forms of golf balls, the feather golf ball was said to travel farther than the gutties. This is due to the smooth surface of the gutties that limits the capacity of the golf ball to cover more distance.

With this new scientific analysis, the developers of golf ball finally came up with balls with the "dimples" that are predominant in modern golf balls nowadays.

Dimples are crafted into golf balls so as to reduce the aerodynamic drag, which will be acting on the ball if it were totally smooth. This is because smooth balls, when sailing through the air, leave a huge pocket of low-pressure air in its stir therefore creating a drag. With the application of drag, the ball slows down.

Hence, by having dimples on golf balls, the pressure differential goes down and the drag force is reduced. These dimples create turbulence in the air surrounding the golf ball. This, in turn, forces the air to clasp the golf ball more closely. By doing so, the air trails the warp created by the ball towards the back instead of flowing past it. This results to a smaller wake and lesser drag.

Dimples also help players to put backspin on a shot making the golf ball break off on the putting green.

The idea of putting dimples on golf balls can be traced back during the gutta percha phase. Coburn Haskell introduced the one-piece rubber cored ball encased in a gutta percha sphere. It was during this time when the players observed how their shots become more and more predictable as their balls turned rough from play.
When William Taylor applied the dimple pattern to a Haskell ball in 1905, golf balls finally took their modern form.

From then on, dimpled golf balls were officially used in every golf tournament. In 1921, the golf balls took its form with standard size and weight.

Today, there is an abundant selection of golf balls to fit different golf game and condition. There are golf balls that offer control, while some offer distance. In whatever ways golf balls vary, only one thing is common and known. Golf balls are not just elements of the sports arena; they are more than ever paradigm of a concept in physics.

So without further ado, here are a few golf tips for lowering your golf handicap ahead of your big holiday!

1) Practice, practice, practice!

Sounds obvious, but the best golf tip is to practice as much as possible. While not everyone can get to their local golf course for a round everyday, you can still work on your swing in the privacy of your own home – chipping balls into a bucket in your back garden, or observing your swing movements in a mirror. When practice swinging, start slowly and feel the movement before speeding up to the full tempo. Even a tiny bit of daily practice will help build up your golf muscle memory - it’s amazing what 10 minutes a day can do to your golf holiday performance!

2) Prepare like you’re a pro

In golf, however, you are the boss. You are in charge of making every move. The ball just sits there, waiting for you to make your shot. And you are 100% responsible for every play that happens. You cannot blame a bad play on a pitch, another teammate, or any other excuse.

This is what makes golf so difficult, and yet so challenging and fun to play. And on top of that, you have people watching you, all in complete silence. Talk about the need for focus!

Golf requires that you focus and think about every shot you take. 2. Golf balls do not last forever: Golf balls have a shelf life. After approximately 1 year, you will lose distance with the same ball. Golf Balance Exercises To Create A Rock-Solid Golf Swing

Golf balance exercises should be a must for every amateur golfer. One of the biggest issues with most amateurs is balance, stability and body control in their golf swing.

So often I see a golfer swinging outside their physical capabilities and losing their balance, resulting in a severe mishit that will end up being a double or triple bogey.

There is a physical requirement to maintaining your golf balance throughout your swing. The golf swing position commonly referred to as golf posture is a very unnatural position for the body to be in at address, let alone throughout the swing.

Having a forward tilt over the balls of your feet require a high level of both strength and flexibility in your hamstrings. Just get in your golf posture and reach back behind your upper leg to see how tight your hamstrings are.

If your hamstrings are tight and/or weak, you will have no chance at maintaining your golf posture and ultimately balance throughout your golf swing.

How about your quadriceps?

The play a critical role in keeping your golf swing stable. Rotating your upper body around a somewhat fixed lower body takes a tremendous amount of leg (quad) strength. Also your quads help maintain your knee flex that you had at address. If your quads are weak, your legs will straighten, causing you to come out of our swing.

As you can see, your golf balance requires muscular strength and flexibility. Without it, you’ll be falling all over your swing forever!

One great golf balance exercise (drill) is swinging and actually hitting balls on one leg. Give it a try! You’ll soon find out how difficult it is. But stick with it, and you’ll become a pro at it. If you can hit straight balls on one leg, using both legs will be a cinch.

In all of my advanced golf performance training programs, I have the golfer do a majority of their strength exercises on one leg. It is brutal! It takes so much focus and concentration, you’ll be sweating before you even grab the weight.
